Don't Surrender Discernment

Not every practice that has become common in church life reflects the heart of God's Kingdom. Throughout history, some religious traditions and leadership styles have unintentionally shifted people's focus away from a personal relationship with God and toward dependence on human authority. When believers are discouraged from studying the Scriptures for themselves, asking honest questions, or testing what they are taught against God's Word, they can become vulnerable to unhealthy control. Jesus repeatedly challenged religious leaders who elevated human traditions above God's commands (Mark 7:8–13), and the Bereans were commended because they examined the Scriptures daily to verify what they were taught (Acts 17:11). God never intended His people to surrender their discernment. Every teaching, instruction, and practice should be measured against the Word of God. The standard is not a pastor's opinion, a church's tradition, or a popular teaching—the standard is Scripture. Healthy spiritual leaders point people to Christ and equip them to grow in Him; they do not seek to replace the believer's responsibility to know, obey, and follow God's Word.
